Cricket Scotland statement (13/5/20) – all domestic cricket suspended until July 1st at earliest

Cricket Scotland has recently announced that all cricket activity in Scotland is to be suspended until July 1st, 2020 at earliest, with plans to resume competitive cricket on August 1st. The month’s gap between the potential resumption of cricket activities and the beginning of any competitive cricket is to allow ‘time for players to prepare for cricket, for grounds to be made ready and for any necessary protocols to be put in place.’

Even with the possibility of playing into September (depending on player and ground availability) this latest decision still means that there will be no league cricket or national cup competitions played in 2020. Scotland’s various regional bodies will make separate announcements regarding their plans for running their own cup competitions. Despite the cancellation of all league cricket and national cups, it is hoped that, after consultation with clubs and the regional bodies, a friendly or, if possible, competitive fixture structure can still be arranged. This structure, Cricket Scotland advises, will most likely utilise the T20 format.

Commenting on the latest decision, Cricket Scotland Chief Exec Gus Mackay said: “We very much understand that those involved in the game will be disappointed that there will be no league cricket this year and the decision has been made with a heavy heart.

“However, in all the circumstances, we believe this decision brings the necessary clarity for the game in Scotland while seeking to provide, when we can, some form of cricket in 2020, working within the Scottish Government’s guidelines.”

This announcement comes with a caveat, however; and it is a pretty big one. The possibility of resuming cricketing activities, and the subsequent commencement of competitive cricket, is subject to how the continuing development of the current situation and will be guided by advice given by the Scottish and UK governments.

In light of this recent announcement, the club would again like to make it clear that the use of the club’s facilities, either for training or otherwise, is still strictly prohibited, until the government and Cricket Scotland advises that cricketing activities can resume. When we receive such advice, we will, of course, communicate it to our members, along with any additional instructions and advice pertaining to the safe use of our facilities.
